ABRAZO
2016

ABRAZO is a collaborative work between Caroline Hayeur and the multidisciplinary artist D. Kimm. The photographer captures the movements and the ambience. D. Kimm has been dancing for many years and has developed a meaningful relationship with the tango community, connexion that permits an intimate immersion. The aim: to offer an insider’s view that avoids stereotypes.

Presented for the first time in 2016 at Occurrence, Espace d’art et d’essai contemporains, in Montréal, the corpus combines photo and video installations. A series of over fifty photographic prints mounted on antique frames, and a double slide show projection takes place in the first room of the gallery.

Two videos are screened: one of a couple dancing in the snow in Montréal, another showing the performance of Argentine milongueros from a framed screen.

An immersive installation including four video projections is hosted in the second room of the gallery. The set up creates a dialogue between North and South with images and interviews collected in Buenos Aires and Montréal.

Caroline Hayeur and D. Kimm are looking at tango as social dancing and as a confluence medium for devotees from different backgrounds, generations and social classes. The artists have decided to deviate from the show, competition, performance, and historical perspectives.

This first collaboration between the two artists brings together photos, videos and writing. Their study begins during an artist residency in Buenos Aires in 2014 and is extended in 2016 in the Montréal tango community. Their challenging approach: how can we describe the ritual of abrazo, this physical and emotional meeting?

The theme of the abrazo/the meeting opens with a reflexion on male-female relationships, social etiquette, relation to standards, queer identity recognition and self-representation/self-staging.

ABRAZO is produced in collaboration with Les Filles électriques and Phenomena festival, whose objective is to put on the spot independent, unclassifiable artists with a dedicated artistic approach.
