HUMANITAS
2010

To my mother, Josée – 1941-2008,

to my grandmother, Françoise – 1911-2009,

to my friend, Tex – 1947-2010

This series of documentary style portraits represents a range of intense emotions of individuals from birth to death.  Is it possible that today’s materialistic, individualistic, self-centered society leads us to seek out ever-stronger emotions because of the frustrations we live and the compromises that we refuse to make?

The project focuses on the desire for intensity in a world becoming more and more extreme: choosing intensity in areas such as sports, sexuality or work, as well as experiencing intensity in life-changing moments such as birth, illness, grief, accidents, addiction or conflict.

What is the need that we as people have for thrill? How do the moments of intensity and of loss of control define the edges our lives? How do we react to situations imposed on us by nature, by others or chosen ourselves?  What drives us to always seek ‘more’, leaving us reluctant to surrender to ‘what is’ or simply give up? How do we decode the meaning of gestures and expressions using the prism of our experience?

The aim of the project is to portray the wide range of emotions that we experience: pain, pleasure, fear or anger.  The individual [even as part of a group] is isolated and framed in the photograph.

The shooting took place over more than two years, with subjects of all ages and social backgrounds, in Montreal or other areas of Quebec. The subjects were never staged, with most shooting occurring in natural settings “in the wild” while the subject was experiencing an intense emotional state.  This is a social documentary work with a connection to contemporary installation. One of the biggest challenges was to find people trusting enough to share such moments of intimacy.

When presented as an exhibition, the images are arranged as mosaics, in lines to suggest the form and rhythm of an electrocardiogram.  The installation format changes according to the location of the presentation. The body of work can be striking due to the photographs and the installation, leading to strong reactions in viewers. It was observed that some people viewing the exhibit had to leave the room to take a break and some burst into tears.
