When night falls and the doors close at the Montreal Insectarium, what happens among the insects that live there? Some hide in a flower, a tree trunk; others become active to eat, mate, or even return to the laboratory?

In this new multidisciplinary project, Caroline Hayeur continues her research with infrared cameras by photographing and filming insects in macro as they go about their nocturnal activities. Carried by a sound creation by Myléna Bergeron, the poetic and documentary work transports us into a black-and-white choreography of hexapods ending with the emergence of chrysalides.

The project has its genesis in the artist residency jointly organized by the Montreal Insectarium and the Conseil des arts de Montréal, of which Hayeur is the laureate in 2025.

Through nighttime shots from infrared cameras installed throughout the year 2025 at the Insectarium, this scientifico-poetic study focuses on the activity of phasmidas (stick insects) and giant hooded grasshoppers, the sleep and awakening of butterflies, as well as the relentless work of Atta ants. The result is a video-music work created for a dome that celebrates entomophilia through an intimate gaze on the nocturnal life of the museum’s insects.
